Please remember that the spelling of place names and the names of Parishes, as with the spelling of surnames, has varied over the course of many years. We have endeavoured to check the spelling of names in this catalogue to ensure accuracy, however be aware of variations from present day spelling. Adopt a liberal approach in your research in the interpretation of the entries.

CENSUS.

The A.I.G.S. Library holds a massive permanent collection of original English & Welsh Census records,
thanks to the generosity of it's members who continue to support the Institute's Census Appeal. 
This collection is the largest collection of such material in Australia and is continually growing.
1841  CENSUS.
The original census records are available for many or all areas of most Counties with Pieces
available on over 500 films with others on microfiche. 
Many films hold several Piece Numbers.
A number of Counties are now complete and others will be soon.
The Catalogue for each County has details of the films or fiche held for that area as well
as an alpha sort of the Parishes covered with the relevant film or fiche number.
1851  CENSUS.
The original census records are available for many or all areas of most Counties on over 700 film
 and with other Pieces available on microfiche.
A growing number of Counties are completely covered including London, Middlesex and Cornwall.
The Catalogue for each County has details of the films or fiche held for that area
 as well as an alpha sort of the Parishes covered with the relevant film or fiche number.
Please note that the library also has all published indexes to this and other Census.
1861  CENSUS.
The original census records are available for many areas of some Counties on many films
 and some on microfiche.
The Catalogue for each County has details of the films or fiche held for that area as well
 as an alpha sort of the Parishes covered with the relevant film or fiche number.
1871  CENSUS.
The original census records are available for many areas of most Counties on over 300 films
 and a few on microfiche.
The Catalogue for each County has details of the films or fiche held for that area as well
 as an alpha sort of the Parishes covered with the relevant film or fiche number.
1881  CENSUS.
Transcription project undertaken by the Family History Societies of England & Wales with the LDS Church.
This project is  available on CD and also on microfiche.
See the Catalogue for individual Counties for details.  
1891  CENSUS.
The original census records are available for many areas of most Counties on hundreds of microfiche.
Please see the alphabetical sort in the Catalogue for each County for details of the Parishes covered.
All of the Greater London area and all of the Counties of Lancashire, and Yorkshire are available on CD.
1901  CENSUS.
Some microfiche copies of the actual census are available in the library.
Others can be obtained through Donate a Fiche.

1881 British Census and National Index on CD  as an Index and Transcript. 
Covers England, Scotland, Wales, Channel Islands, Isle of Man & the Royal Navy.

ALSO available on microfiche.
A complete National Surname Index for England & Wales is also available.
Each County then has a set of fiche consisting of a Surname Index, Birth Index,
Census Place Index, As Enumerated, Misc. Notes, Ships, Institutions. 
Access by using the Surname Index.
Use the first of the 4 numbers at the end of the row to identify the correct
 `As Enumerated' fiche.

The Library holds all published 1851 Census Indexes, some printed, others on fiche.
In addition there are many indexes to other Census years in the collection.
