“Walhalla - Gold town of Gippsland"
From 1863 until 1914, Walhalla was one of the richest gold areas in Australia.
Located 180 km east of Melbourne in a deep valley in the Victorian Alps,
Walhalla was a boom town of the 1880s. With a population of more than 3000
people, it boasted 10 hotels, 7 churches, a school with over 500 students
and several dance halls.
Today there are less than 20 permanent residents, but over 80,000 people
vist the town each year. This historic township has many unique features -
a mountain top cricket ground, a cemetery perched on the side of a steep hillside,
an original gold mine and of course a rich social history!
Walhalla's history and folklore will be explored in this presentation.
