Calendars of Documents
for the following Courts:-
The Commissary Court of Argyll which dealt mainly with
executries of the deceased although it also dealt with cases of small
debt and scandal i.e. defamation. Its jurisdiction was restricted to
the parishes of mainland Argyll together with the parishes of
Kilmallie, Kilmonivaig and Glenelg Inverness-shire. The Calendar makes

Petitions, the Edicts and the Bonds of Caution (i.e. the sureties) of
the Court.
The Vice Admiral Court of Argyll which dealt with matters
civil and criminalrelating to the sea and trade on it. Its jurisdiction
was over the west coast of Scotland, including the islands apart from
those in the Clyde Estuary, from Dumbarton Rock to Cape Wrath in the
far North-West. 1685-1825
The Justice of the Peace Court of the County of Argyll which
dealt with ordinary matters in the countryside, in particular it dealt
with issues concerning employment, excise matters including the issue
of licenses to sell
beer, ale and spirits and from the late 18th century onwards, small
debt.
The Burgh Court of Campbeltown which could deal with a range
of legal matters affecting the townspeople of the Burgh almost as wide
as the Sheriff Court.
The Burgh Court of Inveraray – similar to the Court of
Campbelltown.
